With the economy showing signs of recovering, phones are ringing again at offices of visual-display companies. But their way of doing business has changed, said Brad Somberg, president of Burlingame, Calif.–based design company B&N Industries and a 30-year veteran of the visual-display game.
“I think money is being infused back into the marketplace, but it is more intelligent” said Somberg, who also serves on the board of directors for trade group Association of Retail Environments. “For every dollar spent, [retailers] are expecting more value for their dollar,” he said.

PAVE THE WAY: 3D DESIGN CHALLENGE
AND THE WINNER IS:
B&N's award-winning GlobalShop booth did more than promote the company; it was a showcase of the creativity of the next generation of store designers and visual merchandisers. B+N sponsored a 3-D design contest in association with the Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) that challenged students in store design, interior design, visual merchandising and industrial design programs to create a countertop sunglasses display.
More than 70 entries from over 11 schools and institutions were received. A judging panel of retailers and industry suppliers narrowed that field down to 12 finalists, which then worked with B+N to create prototypes of their actual designs. These projects were on display in B+N's booth in a red carpet runway presentation. During the A.R.E. awards presentation Wednesday night, Hayeon Choi of New York's Fashion Institute
of Technology was awarded first place honors for his display. Awards for second and third, as well as special merit awards, were also handed out, with B+N awarding more than $12,000 to the students.
David Kepron, Little studio principal, store design, says while the booth is a simple, clear definition of B+N's products, "they should be commended simply for promoting the creativity of students in the visual and store design fields of study."
B+N's PAVE THE WAY booth was also awarded
"Outstanding Booth" by VMSD.

Barcelona: Influenced by our recent trip to Spain, this flourish of the hand pattern interprets the ruffles and flounces of the hems, as seen in the dresses of traditional Flamenco dancers.
Chinoiserie: Inspired by the style originated in the 17th century, and which incorporated fanciful imagery of trees, birds, bridges, and temples. Its whimsical origin attempts to imitate Chinese porcelain and the use of lacquer-like materials and decoration.

NEW: THE SOFFITTO SYSTEM. A CEILING-SUSPENDED COLLECTION THAT USES THE SAME TRACK SYSTEM AS OUR CABLE SYSTEMS

The Soffitto System is a new, track-based, vertically-suspended system for display. All Uprights are suspended from an aluminum track which can be screwed into a ceiling or window soffit at any location. The Uprights have a glide, which keeps the Upright hanging vertically plumb. All Uprights can be slid along the track to any location, or completely removed by sliding off the end of the track for a change in layout. The Uprights and their glides are polished stainless steel. Because they use the same tracks, the Soffitto System is interchangeable with our Cable Maxi and Cable Mini Systems. To Learn more about Soffitto, go here >>

Graphic Cube|Pedestals are display and merchandising cubes which have the ability to hold graphics on any, or all, of the four sides. The frame is constructed from brushed stainless steel, and has channels which allow graphics to be easily slipped into place. Levelers on the bottom ensure they stay balanced on uneven floor surfaces. The top is made from a solid piece of brushed stainless steel, and registers into place on top of the frame. It creates a perfect spot for highlighting product, and can hold up to 80 pounds (on the 22" version) and 60 pounds (on the 30" version). Graphic Cube|Pedestals can also be used without graphics for an open and light contrast to a Cube|Pedestal with full graphics. With several combined together, they produce a strong, impactful display, and provide easy adaptation for seasonal messaging or new promotions.
Light Platforms are modular, internally-illuminated display boxes that can connect together, or be used individually. The simple, open style legs are polished stainless steel (available also in gloss white powder coat). The legs have two sets of mounting holes, which allow them to share two Light Platforms, or be moved inward for a single Light Platform. Light Platforms can be ordered with either fluorescent bulbs, which can be easily changed by lifting the top, or with programmable color-changing LED’s. Fluorescent Light Platforms “daisy chain” their power feeds through a hole in the bottom, so that there is only one cord to plug in. Color-changing LED Light Platforms have individual power feeds.
