(April 21, 2015) – B+N Industries is pleased to announce their inaugural debut at The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in Booth 1762, Friday, May 16 – Tuesday, May 19. In what is set to be an interactive and product driven celebration of artistic talent, B+N Industries will feature of the moment artist Shantell Martin illustrating live on their most versatile merchandising and design solution, System 1224. On the other side, the colorful and whimsical collaboration of Furniture, Infused Veneer, (and even Surfboards) with the late artist Rex Ray will be spotlighted. Also making its premiere is Fortina: a remarkable architectural system that will fool your senses, replicating wood slats and Louvers with aluminum and a hyper-realistic non-pvc surface.

Originally from London with a VJ stint in Tokyo, artist Shantell Martin is currently living out her dream in New York where she recently became a visiting scholar at MIT Media Lab. In between “Drawing On Everything”, you can find her collaborating with high-profile designers like Kelly Wearstler, creating displays for luxury retail brands like Joyce (Hong Kong), working on exclusive commissions for private clients, teaching at ITP NYU, or volunteering with some of her favorite Arts organizations. Artist Rex Ray, real name Michael Patterson, was born in Germany but eventually came to the states and settled in San Francisco to attend the Art Institute. In fact, San Franciscans are honored to consider him one of their own for both his contributions to Art and Activism. Ray’s iconic work ranges from fine art to collages made entirely by hand, paintings on both resin and canvas, photography, print works, as well as graphic design. Once familiar it is impossible not to recognize these abstract, color-filled, playful patterns with mid-century modern influences and psychedelic whimsy as his. Our collaboration is the perfect fusion of his artistry with our innovative design techniques.

For this year’s GlobalShop we wanted to do something fresh, modern and memorable, so we invited artist Shantell Martin to apply her #DrawingOnEverything philosophy to our installation using her trademark black ink on white surfaces. Without question, Shantell Martin for B+N Industries was the highlight of the show. Many of you were captivated by Shantell’s presence, personality, and live art performance, but for those of you who missed it – this is your opportunity to get the creative scoop.
The foundational elements of our Shantell Martin for B+N experience were based on one of our most versatile merchandising and interior designs, System 1224. This system uses rectilinear forms and repeating modularity with light, taut, planar surfaces – devoid of applied ornamentation with the capacity to adapt to any interior, aesthetic, or type of merchandise. Timelessness and adjustability are at the core of the system, and usability is inherent in its disciplined design. Any component can be removed and replaced from the front of the system, singularly, without tools. This gives the user the opportunity to quickly grow and change a project with the seasons, marketing rollouts, or current inventory. Just as the great modernist architects of the last century designed buildings with implicit functionality and simplicity, System 1224 is a classic solution for the retail and hospitality environments of today.
We used our newest product line, Fortina, to finish the perimeter wall which continued on to a create a ceiling. This remarkable architectural system will fool your senses by replicating wood slats and Louvers with aluminum and a hyper-realistic non-pvc surface. The combination of these materials makes the collection perfect for “green” building. The large collection of finishes has a touch and feel that is indistinguishable from real wood. It dramatically enhances interior and exterior environments with the benefits of lighter weight, less cost, less waste, easier installation, as well as more consistent color and finish than real wood.
Since Shantell’s trademark involves applying black ink to white surfaces (and occasionally silver ink to black surfaces), it was only natural to build a predominantly white version of System 1224 for her working canvas – with a dose of black for added drama. The panels, shelving, and desk were powder coated in white, while the black panels were powder coated in black. A few unique standouts were the LED lit graphic panels used in between the white and black paneled sections, acrylic boxes containing white converse high tops, and a black metal case within the black paneling that Shantell used to create a special hand drawn silver vignette.
Shantell’s process always involves a mix of spontaneity and thoughtful precision. With each piece, she intuitively determines a starting point and then applies a single uninterrupted first stroke which serves as a reference point for the flow of the surrounding lines to come. At the beginning of Day 1 as seen in the video snapshot below, Shantell had an entirely pure and untouched canvas to work with. She began with her initiation line and moved around System 1224 repeating this technique until she found a resting place to branch out the details of her visual story.
Nothing in the space was immune to Shantell’s touch, that meant acrylic boxes, shelving, the desk, and ottomans were all fair game. Perhaps the most interesting moments occurred when her pen hit the LED lit paneling, black metal box, and the floor which we reserved for the start of Day 2.

At the beginning of Day 2, Shantell hit the floor and applied her incredible visual language to every corner. This was one of our favorite aspects of the #ShantellMartinforBN installation, and it added such a unique layer of artistic interest. If you’ve been paying attention, you might be wondering how Shantell was able to draw in permanent marker on System 1224 two consecutive days in row. Here is where it gets interesting, since we wanted Shantell to be able to begin each day with a clean slate we decided to use our custom magnetic graphics in solid white to cover each of the panels. These magnetic pieces are currently employed to display marketing or custom imagery in the retail and hospitality environments or they can be done as shown. Many of our visitors found it remarkable how seamlessly our magnetic graphics can transform each System 1224 panel. So with her original artwork underneath, Shantell was ready to begin a new masterpiece.
Shantell’s installations have similar qualities due to the use of her chosen format of black and white. This monochromatic approach allows the eye to explore her work without the influential tone that color can give, i.e. apples are red and figures have flesh. Each of her pieces is entirely original, and always contains a philosophical message throughout. The heart of her work involves engaging the viewer with playful and whimsical shapes, characters, and text in both question and statement form. There are a few iconic phrases she likes to use as a compass in her own artistic journey that she shares with her audience, such as Who Are You, Are You You, and You Are You. This simple question/answer wordplay has given her internal direction in the art world and has become a fundamental assessment tool in keeping her mission at the forefront, a reminder to be oneself in all things. Throughout the show, Shantell engaged the audience and passed along her black & white message with hand drawn cards. She also personalized her outfit to include a custom message for B+N Industrues as seen below.
We feel it is our responsibility as a brand to develop and inspire the next generation of designers – since Shantell Martin is currently a scholar at MIT (Media Lab), it felt natural to have her host an exclusive class for current students majoring in the Arts and Fashion related degrees. The students were so grateful and thrilled to have intimate time with her. During the hour sessions at the end of each day, she demonstrated her artistic process and explored the philosophical meanings behind some of her work.
At the end of the session, Shantell continued “Drawing on Everything” with our employees and students offering up themselves for fresh “Shantoos” (aka Shantell Tatoos)…

For the woman who’s philosophy involves “Drawing on Everything”, it’s no coincidence that Shantell Martin has the word art in her name. On first glance the unknowing eye could naively assess her work as simple when evaluating her “trademark – black ink and white surfaces”. On closer evaluation of her illustrative gift to “transform everything from walls, found objects, ceramics, luxury goods, sneakers, and even faces into a visual narrative”, it becomes experientally clear that the absence of traditional color use is what invites you to explore her whimsy and sense of adventure in a way that becomes individually meaningful.
Color can serve as an easy guide for the eye, informing you that an apple is red or faces are some shade of flesh. When the object is composed of black & white, your eye no longer pin points where to start or hang out. You immediately begin a journey of exploration that is self guiding, allowing you to find hidden things. Or as she likes to put it, “people find the messages they need” within each piece. This inventive form of visual language she is creating with her work teaches us a new way to see and communicate.
We are always on the lookout for unique happenings in the art, fashion, and retail scene, and there’s nothing we love more than when these worlds collide. We love the idea of an artist creating interest with works of art as the backdrop for high fashion, objects, or home collections, and we weren’t the only ones falling in love at first sight with this artist on the rise.
Forward thinking interior, furniture, textile, object, and fashion designer Kelly Wearstler also took note, developing a serious design crush on her that eventually turned into a full on collaboration. Kelly reasoned that “Everything has Shantell’s hand on it. What she does can’t be repeated — especially when it’s done so spontaneously. I love Picasso and Keith Haring, and Shantell’s work has that kind of sensibility and familiarity.” Which is why she didn’t hesitate to have Shantell apply her signature to a Limited Edition set of her White Calcutta and Negro Marquina Kiss, Box, Diamond, Fractured Heart, and furniture pieces like the Elliot Chair and Brea Ottoman, as well as fashion totes and scarves. The collection was sold through Kelly Wearstler, 1st Dibs, and Bergdorf Goodman.

Now that we were properly infatuated with Shantell, we were ready to cross paths in person in hopes of working together in some creative capacity. Apparently we put that energy out into the universe, because our paths did literally cross on a walk to dinner in Miami during Art Basel in December. Through a googly-eyed admiration filled spiel, we traded business cards and she gave us a few stickers (like the ones below) with her message on them as well as our own “Drawing on Everything” black marker. We wanted to know more about her story, these stickers, and that pen – for it was clear she had something to say.
We finally got the chance to go deeper with Shantell during a visit to her Tribeca studio. She playfully charmed us with her gentle spirit and walked us through all of the curious objects that fill her space. As it turns out, this Central Saint Martin’s honor grad and former Tokyo based VJ has been drawing from her humble beginnings in London to tell her story for years. In fact, many of the objects she loves to work with include toys that were economically impossible to own as a child (such as airplanes or dolls), and she is the first to admit her obsession with being a “big kid”. At the same time, the creativity inspired through some of her childhood experience is what breeds her curiosity with objects many would consider discarding – like plastic bottles or chunks of leftover construction site marble. Who isn’t familiar with the imagination’s ability to expand when you give a kid a cardboard box or a shiny set of pots and pans? Or in this case, A white wall or object and a black marker.
Inside Shantell’s studio you will find a variety of toys and objects – airplanes, slabs of marble, tennis shoes, chairs in black and white. Below you will find her imagination extends to the interior of the plane.
However, it isn’t all black and white when it comes to Shantell, there’s also a philosophical message at play in her work that has origins in her family dynamic as the only mixed race child in a family with five blonde haired blue-eyed siblings. In fact, the visual difference in her appearance helped to propel the exploration of her signature phrases, “WHO ARE YOU”, “ARE YOU YOU”, and “YOU ARE YOU” (which also serve hidden typographical messages about finding the WAY and getting to YAY).

She uses these phrases as a kind of personal compass, and they began garnering the attention of an audience around the same time she made the move to New York City in 2008/9. The transition to NYC “marked the beginning of a rapid ascent into the art world. Her brand collaborations with prominent commercial brands, as well as with bespoke luxury partners like 3×1 denim, Suno, and Jaw Bone quickly drew a fine art and commercial audience.” These days, between her work with main stream and private clients, Shantell also serves as an adjunct professor at ITP, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and recently became a visiting scholar at MIT Media Lab where she’s making strides with technology and art in ways that will make your inner geek smile.
